The kota in Soweto will be receiving yet another grand celebration in the form of the Soweto Kota Festival which is set to take place in its ninth year on September 12 & 13, 2026.

To be held at Elkah Cricket Oval, Rockville, Soweto, this two-day festival will see the coming together of food enthusiasts, music lovers, families, entrepreneurs and thousands of other visitors who have made this festival an important event in the township.

Started by Sidwell Tshingilane, the festival has since then grown in size, drawing thousands of visitors and providing a great opportunity for local food sellers and the youth. Additionally, the festival has evolved into something bigger than just a food festival; a venue for entertainment and township entrepreneurship.

This year will see more than 40 Kota sellers serving their version of the legendary sandwich for between R60 and more. The variety of sandwiches ranges from classic combinations to adventurous combinations of chips, cheese, polony, meat and many other fillings.

Also, economic opportunities abound because the team keeps using the unemployed youths in the process. In addition, vendors use the platform to make money and market themselves in front of many people.

The music element also remains very present, with many concerts scheduled for both days. The 2026 entertainment list will have Lamiez Holworthy, Tracy, Mr X, Uncool and Jobe London. Further details about the entertainment are still to be revealed.

In addition, there is a strong sponsorship and partnership base of companies, such as Aromat, Renault, GoTyme Bank, Standard Bank, PayShap, First Choice Cheese, Super Store Dlamini and Big Tree Beverages, as well as media partners, like Sowetan, Soweto TV and Jozi FM.

With the tenth anniversary of the festival taking place next year, the ninth edition becomes crucial before an even grander festival in 2027.

Finally, the Soweto Kota Festival continues to show that the kota is more than just food; it is culture, business, community and Soweto itself served on one plate.
