About A Journal:
With a background in jazz studies from the University of Cape Town, singer and songwriter Bonj is a star on the rise. The presentation of her album, A Journal is a relentless pursuit of innovation and individuality.
The project is a genre-bending and experimental, danceable offering. Some of the songs are romantic, love-themed- while others, like Power and Ain’t It True, are inspirational anthems. Bonj’s sound is based on unconventionality and the breaking of boundaries.
The opening track, Fly Away is a fusion of electro, pop, and soul music elements, resulting in a unique, catchy sound, lead by Bonj’s husky and strong voice, that’s rich, seductive, and incredibly entrancing.
The lyrics reflect on the strength of unity that’s brought to the fore and reinforced by the refrain that she “won’t let you go.”
Like A Movie is a no-holds-barred declaration of love over producer, DJ, and songwriter, Sketchy Bongo’s polished pop-R&B production. On it, Bonj sings about an enigma controlling her and her inability to explain or control it.
Ain’t It True is a socially conscious number, calling for tenderness and care in the way people relate and deal with each other. Ain’t It True sees Bonj contemplating on the premise that humanity needs “each other more than ever,” as she explores and exhibits her incredible, soulful vocal range. The track also features a striking saxophone solo and accompaniment at the peak, putting into sounds, the singer’s powerful call for change.
With A Journal as the vehicle, Bonj showcases masterful vocal layering and harmonising on the project, alongside high-quality production that fuses elements of pop, electronica, R&B, techno, as well as jazz.
