Last night at Coachella, the electrifying South African vocal ensemble, The Joy, took the stage alongside the sensational Doja Cat, igniting the crowd with their soul-stirring melodies. Handpicked by Doja Cat herself, The Joy lent their captivating vocals to two of her tracks, including the recent hit “Acknowledge Me” and a unique rendition of “Shutcho,” infused with Zulu lyrics.
This extraordinary moment marked a pinnacle for the quintet, following the release of their latest single, “You Complete Me,” and the announcement of their highly anticipated debut album, set to drop on June 21 via Transgressive Records. Recorded live at the prestigious Church Studios in London, without any instruments or overdubs, their forthcoming 11-track album promises to be a masterpiece, showcasing the remarkable vocal prowess of each member: Pastor (Ntokozo Bright Magcaba), Duzie (Melokuhle Mkhungo), Guduza (Sphelele Hlophe), Sthombe (Phelelani Sithole), and Marcus (Sanele Ngcobo) – a group inseparable since their school days.
The music video for “You Complete Me,” filmed by the acclaimed team at Up The Game, captures the essence of their live recording session, offering a glimpse into the transcendent beauty of their harmonies.
For The Joy, their musical journey began with a serendipitous moment, as five young boys from Hammarsdale, South Africa, discovered their harmonic connection during an impromptu choir practice. Rooted in the rich tradition of Zulu a cappella singing, their sound pays homage to icons like Ladysmith Black Mambazo, drawing on the elemental power of mbube music – a tradition synonymous with spiritual elevation.
Lead vocalist Duzie channels this ancestral energy, invoking a primal force through his impassioned delivery, reminiscent of lion-hearted singers before him. Their music resonates beyond borders, earning them recognition from global icons like Alicia Keys and Jennifer Hudson, who praise their unparalleled talent.
