Tyla is bringing the APOP era back to where it all began. The two-time GRAMMY Award-winning South African superstar will return to Johannesburg on Sunday, 16 August 2026, for a special APOP Takeover at Gold Reef City, celebrating the fans who have supported her journey from local breakout star to one of Africa’s biggest global music exports.

The homecoming, presented in partnership with South African Tourism and powered by Absa, will give Tyla an opportunity to reconnect with her fans while celebrating the success of her latest album and the international impact of her distinctly South African sound.

Known affectionately as the Tygers, Tyla’s fans are being invited to become part of the celebration through a TikTok initiative. Fans can create a video using any song from the A*POP album for the opportunity to win a ticket to Gold Reef City and attend the Fan Appreciation Day on 16 August.

The initiative encourages fans to put their own creative spin on their favourite A*POP tracks while celebrating the music and the artist’s remarkable journey. For many of Tyla’s supporters, the event will be an opportunity to see the Johannesburg-born star back on home soil after her meteoric rise to international fame.

South African Tourism will also provide transport for selected fans travelling from different parts of Gauteng to Gold Reef City, creating greater access to the celebration and giving young South Africans the chance to experience Tyla’s homecoming.

The initiative carries a message that extends beyond entertainment. It aims to inspire young people to recognise their own potential, embrace their talents and understand that global success can begin right here at home.

“Tyla has always been authentic in her work. A daughter of the African soil and an advocate for South Africa. I agree with her, that you must visit South Africa to understand its beauty and its people,” says Minister of Tourism Patricia de Lille.

The homecoming comes just weeks after the worldwide release of A*POP on 24 July. The 14-track sophomore album sees Tyla continue to develop the sound she has dubbed “Popiano”, blending contemporary pop and R&B with amapiano-inspired rhythms, house influences and references to her South African musical roots.

The album has already made an impact internationally, debuting at No. 43 on the Billboard 200 with 16,966 first-week units and reaching No. 5 on Billboard’s Top R&B Albums chart. It also climbed digital charts around the world, including a reported No. 1 position on iTunes worldwide and No. 3 on Apple Music’s global album chart shortly after its release.

A*POP has also reached No. 1 on Billboard’s World Albums chart, making Tyla the only African artist to achieve multiple No. 1s on the chart with different projects.

The album’s momentum has been driven by fan favourites including “CHANEL”, “IS IT LOVE”, “SHE DID IT AGAIN” featuring Zara Larsson and “IS IT”, with each track showcasing another side of Tyla’s evolving artistry.

The project also reflects the global community surrounding her music. A*POP features collaborations with South African artists MaWhoo, Babalwa M and Liquideep, alongside Swedish pop star Zara Larsson. The combination allows Tyla to explore international sounds without losing the cultural identity that has remained central to her career.

For Tyla, returning to Johannesburg is about more than performing in front of a home crowd.

“Whenever I’m home, I feel like myself again. I love being surrounded by my people and my fans – it reminds me where I come from,” she says.

Her latest achievements build on a career that has already produced several historic milestones. Tyla became the first artist to spend 100 weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s U.S. Afrobeats Songs chart and also holds the record for the most No. 1s on the chart.

Her breakout international hit “Water” earned her first GRAMMY Award for Best African Music Performance in 2024, with the singer taking home the same award again in 2026 for “Push 2 Start”.

The success of A*POP comes as Tyla prepares for another major chapter in her career, with her first full headline global tour set to take her music across international markets. Yet despite her growing global profile, her connection to South Africa remains an important part of her identity.

On 16 August, that connection will take centre stage at Gold Reef City as Tyla celebrates the album, her achievements and, most importantly, the fans who have been there since the beginning.

From the global success of “Water” and her historic GRAMMY wins to her international performances and the arrival of A*POP, Tyla’s story continues to demonstrate the growing influence of South African music on the global stage.

A*POP may have taken Tyla to the world, but for one Sunday in August, the world will be looking back towards Johannesburg as the star comes home to celebrate with her Tygers.
