Cape Town, 4 March 2024: Liberty Promenade, in its ongoing dedication to uplift the Mitchell’s Plain community, recently led a heartwarming endeavor to supply school shoes for children in need. Understanding the crucial role of adequate footwear in the lives of young learners, the mall took proactive steps to address this pressing issue. Following valuable input from its patrons, Wavecrest Primary School was chosen as the recipient of this meaningful initiative.

The handover ceremony, held on 22 February, was a joyous occasion marked by smiles and gratitude from the students. The donation of school shoes couldn’t have come at a more opportune time, as many learners across South Africa struggle with inadequate or worn-out footwear, often resorting to ill-fitting hand-me-downs. This situation can lead to discomfort, blisters, and a reluctance to participate in physical activities.

The initiative was made possible through the proceeds from ticket sales of Liberty Promenade’s “Happy Lab” festive activation. Thanks to the unwavering support of shoppers, 30 deserving students each received a brand new pair of school shoes, symbolizing the collective effort in addressing this significant need. These students hail from various neighborhoods, including Rocklands, Strandfontein, Bayview, and San Remo, with some traveling from Phillippi and Khayelitsha.

Research has highlighted the profound impact of proper footwear on children’s attendance and engagement in school-related activities. Liberty Promenade’s initiative seeks to break down barriers to education and empower children in Mitchell’s Plain and its environs to excel both academically and personally.

Brenda Bibby, General Manager of Liberty Promenade, underscored the mall’s commitment to educational equity, remarking, “We firmly believe that every child deserves the chance to thrive in school, irrespective of their socio-economic circumstances. By providing school shoes to these children, we aim to eliminate a hindrance to education and empower them to unleash their full potential.”

Expressing gratitude for Liberty Promenade’s support, Deon Bougardt, principal of Wavecrest Primary School, remarked, “We are immensely thankful for the support of Liberty Promenade, who shares our dedication to advancing education. We firmly believe that being dressed in complete uniform instills discipline. This initiative will undoubtedly empower these students, making them feel valued and enabling them to attend school with pride.”
