Gateway Turns 25 With Big New Stores and Experiences

For 25 years, Gateway Theatre of Shopping has been more than a place to shop. It has become part of the KwaZulu-Natal experience, growing alongside its shoppers while constantly finding new ways to keep people coming back.

The Umhlanga landmark officially opened its doors on 27 September 2001 with approximately 118,000m² of space and around 117 stores. Today, that footprint has expanded to about 176,000m², with more than 380 stores and over 24 million visits recorded every year. In addition, the centre provides employment for more than 5,000 people.

Yet, while the numbers tell one part of the story, Gateway’s 25th birthday is also about where it goes from here.

“Gateway has changed considerably over 25 years because our customers, and the way they spend their time, has changed too,” says Ayesha Sewbaran, Marketing Manager at Gateway. “This birthday is an opportunity to thank the people who have supported us while continuing to give them new reasons to visit, discover and enjoy Gateway.”

And, fittingly, the next chapter comes with plenty of new additions.

Aura will introduce a premium coffee experience featuring a robotic barista, organic African and South American coffees, luxury desserts and wellness treats. Meanwhile, Fairways will bring a dedicated golf lifestyle concept to Gateway, while Shooters will combine competitive games, food, drinks and events.

There is also more on the retail front, with a bespoke Liverpool store and a new flagship Foschini store joining the line-up. Together, these additions highlight how Gateway continues to move beyond conventional shopping by bringing retail, dining, entertainment and experiences under one roof.

However, the birthday celebrations are not only about what is happening inside the mall.

Gateway partnered with Auto-emotive and Reach For A Dream for a Charity Car Run, giving 25 young dreamers the opportunity to choose their favourite supercar and enjoy a thrill ride around the centre before joining a morning of family entertainment and birthday cake.

Shoppers are also getting their chance to celebrate, with four experiences worth R10,000 each up for grabs across fashion, beauty, entertainment and fine dining.

“Reaching 25 years is a milestone we wanted to share,” adds Sewbaran. “Whether that means discovering something new, winning an incredible experience or helping create a memorable morning for 25 very special Dreamers, this celebration is about the community that has grown with us.”

The 25th birthday campaign runs until 22 October 2026.
