There are some songs that refuse to belong to just one generation. More than six decades after Motown changed the sound of popular music, its melodies, stories and cultural influence continue to find new audiences. Now, following a hugely successful and sold-out season earlier this year, AN ODE TO MOTOWN is returning to the Mandela Stage at Joburg Theatre from 4 to 13 September 2026.
The return comes after strong public demand for the production, which captivated audiences during its Black History Month season. Performances were met with standing ovations, while audiences turned out in numbers to experience a theatrical celebration of one of the most influential musical movements of all time.
Produced by Joburg Theatre, AN ODE TO MOTOWN is directed by acclaimed theatre-maker James Ngcobo, with musical direction by Margaret Motsage and choreography by Lulu Mlangeni.
The production features Liesl Penniken, Lerato Mvelase, Tamara Dey, Hlengiwe Pearl, Anele Precious Mthethwa and iComplete, accompanied by a live band recreating the unmistakable sound that made Motown a global musical force.
What sets AN ODE TO MOTOWN apart is that it is not simply a tribute concert. Instead, the production uses theatre, music, storytelling and performance to explore the artists, songs and cultural movement that helped transform popular music forever.
The title itself speaks to the intention behind the production. An ode is an artistic expression of admiration and respect, traditionally used to celebrate someone or something that has left an enduring mark. Here, the stage becomes that expression, with every song, arrangement and performance offering a musical thank-you to the artists and pioneers whose work continues to influence generations.
Audiences can expect to hear timeless classics associated with The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, Smokey Robinson, The Jackson 5, The Commodores, Erykah Badu and many more.
Director James Ngcobo says the decision to frame the production as an ode was deliberate.
“When we say this production is an ode, we are speaking about honoring a legacy that transformed music and culture forever. This is not simply a concert of familiar songs; it is our artistic expression of gratitude to the musicians, writers, dreamers and pioneers who created the Motown sound. Their music gave voice to joy, resilience, love and social change, and those themes continue to resonate with audiences today. Every performance is our way of saying thank you while ensuring that this extraordinary legacy continues to inspire future generations.”
For Musical Director Margaret Motsage, Motown’s lasting appeal comes from its ability to tell stories that remain relevant regardless of time or geography.
“The music of Motown is timeless because it speaks to the human experience. Whether it is love, hope, heartbreak or celebration, these songs continue to unite people across generations. Bringing this music to South African audiences has been an incredible privilege, and we are excited to share this journey once again with audiences who may have missed the first season, as well as those returning to experience it all over again.”
The production’s first season was warmly received by audiences and critics, with Wits Vuvuzela describing it as “more than a tribute concert; it was a vibrant, high-energy homage”, while also praising the performances and noting that there was “not an empty seat in sight.”
Coverage across television, radio, print and digital platforms also highlighted the production’s musicianship, choreography and emotional storytelling, helping establish AN ODE TO MOTOWN as one of Joburg Theatre’s notable productions of 2026.
For Joburg Theatre, the decision to bring the show back was driven by the response from audiences who wanted another opportunity to experience the production.
