Feather Awards 18 Calls On Youth To Sign Their Future

Estimated read time 4 min read

Turning 18 is usually associated with stepping into adulthood, but for the Feather Awards, it has become a much bigger statement.

The Feather Awards is marking its 18th edition with “The Signature Edition”, using the milestone to put South Africa’s LGBTQIA+ community, young people and the choices shaping the country’s future firmly in the spotlight.

For nearly two decades, the awards have celebrated queer visibility, creativity, excellence and allyship. This time around, however, the organisation says the moment calls for more than another glamorous night on the social calendar.

Instead, Feather Awards 18 wants young South Africans to become active participants in the conversations that will shape the country.

Founder Thami “Thami Dish” Willis says turning 18 represents an important moment because a signature is not simply a name. It represents a decision, a commitment and, ultimately, ownership of what comes next.

“We are 18. This is the age of signature – an age where the choices you make matter, and where your name becomes a binding pledge,” says Willis.

The theme arrives against a difficult backdrop, with the organisation pointing to funding cuts affecting HIV programmes, youth employment initiatives and community-based health services relied upon by LGBTQIA+ communities.

At the same time, South Africa is heading into an important local government election cycle, with youth participation remaining a concern.

Consequently, Feather Awards 18 intends to use its platform to move some of those difficult conversations into the public space.

That message will also be visible at Constitution Hill, where the annual Pride flag hoisting will be led by 18-year-old Chanel Diale. The flag will fly during Pride Month at the historic Johannesburg landmark, which is also home to South Africa’s Constitutional Court.

Meanwhile, the awards themselves remain firmly rooted in entertainment and culture.

Fan favourites including Diva Extraordinaire, Hunk of the Year, Cutest Couple and the Simon Nkoli Award return, while the 2026 programme also recognises youth-led movements, digital activism and grassroots organisers.

Among this year’s nominees are Sdumo Mtshali, Vuyo Biyela, Teddy Geldart (DopeZuluboi), Thando Zide, Manana, Zee Nxumalo, Miss Gaga, Coach Desiree Ellis, Felicia Mabuza-Suttle and Mel Viljoen.

Other nominations include ABSA for Best LGBTQIA+ Private Sector Initiative, while Other Village People appears in the Best LGBTQIA+ Youth Initiative category.

The honorary recipients will also include Thobeka Mbane, Felicia Mabuza-Suttle and Hillary Shimi, with the Simon Nkoli Award still to be announced.

Beyond the ceremony, Feather Awards 18 says it will strengthen its year-round workshops, mentorship circles and safe-space dialogues, particularly in communities affected by funding challenges.

So, while the red carpet will undoubtedly bring its usual dose of fashion, personalities and celebration, this year’s edition is attempting to leave the conversation running long after the cameras stop rolling.

As Thami Dish puts it, “Add your signature. Make it count.”

And at 18, that signature is being placed firmly on the future.
