Smartphone users who are tired of constantly reaching for a charger may have a new option to consider. Xiaomi has unveiled its REDMI Note 17 Series, bringing bigger batteries, improved durability and upgraded features to the mid-range market, with the REDMI Note 17 Pro Max 5G leading the lineup.

The launch comes as the REDMI Note Series surpasses 500 million shipments worldwide, marking a major milestone for one of Xiaomi’s best-selling smartphone ranges.

However, this latest generation is not just about keeping up with everyday demands. Xiaomi is putting long-term reliability at the centre of its new range, promising up to six years of security updates across the lineup, with selected models also offering extended battery health support.

The headline feature belongs to the REDMI Note 17 Pro Max 5G, which packs a 10,000mAh battery, Xiaomi’s largest smartphone battery to date. According to the company, the device can deliver up to three days of battery life on a single charge, with 20 minutes of charging providing a full day of use.

Meanwhile, the REDMI Note 17 Pro 5G features an 8,340mAh battery with 67W HyperCharge, while the REDMI Note 17 5G comes with a 7,700mAh battery and 45W turbo charging.

Durability is another major focus. Both Pro models feature IP66, IP68, IP69 and IP69K ratings, alongside reinforced construction and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2. They have also undergone testing for drops of up to three metres onto granite surfaces, according to Xiaomi.

On the display front, the Pro models feature 6.83-inch screens, while the standard REDMI Note 17 5G offers a larger 6.99-inch display. The Pro models also reach a claimed peak brightness of 3,500 nits, while AI-powered tools, Google Gemini and Circle to Search bring additional functionality across the range.

For South African consumers, the REDMI Note 17 Series becomes available from 9 October 2026 through postpaid packages.

The REDMI Note 17 5G starts at R399 per month over 36 months, followed by the REDMI Note 17 Pro 5G at R499 per month and the REDMI Note 17 Pro Max 5G at R599 per month. Xiaomi also lists a bundle offer that includes a 10,000mAh, 22.5W Lite power bank.

With larger batteries and durability taking centre stage, Xiaomi is betting that consumers want smartphones built to last, rather than devices that need replacing every few years.
