The road to Toronto is heating up, and South Africa’s breaking community has another name to watch. B-Boy Ranks emerged victorious at the Red Bull BC One East London Cypher this past weekend, securing his place at the 2026 South Africa National Final and moving one step closer to competing on the world’s biggest breaking stage.
Held on Saturday, 25 July, the East London Cypher brought together some of the country’s top breaking talent as dancers battled for a coveted spot in the National Final. By the end of an intense evening of competition, 34-year-old Azola Mthetho, better known as B-Boy Ranks, stood alone as the city’s champion.
Recognised as the world’s most prestigious one-on-one breaking competition, Red Bull BC One strips the dance battle down to its purest form. There are no rehearsed routines or set playlists. Instead, dancers rely on skill, creativity, musicality, originality and performance as they go head-to-head in front of a panel of expert judges.
The East London event marked the second stop on the Red Bull BC One South Africa calendar following the opening Johannesburg Cypher, where B-Boy Barshie and B-Girl Baylie secured their places at the National Final. With his victory, B-Boy Ranks now joins the growing list of contenders hoping to represent South Africa on the international stage.
“I didn’t expect the outcome because I haven’t been training as much as I used to due to my new work schedule,” said B-Boy Ranks after claiming the title.
His latest victory adds another chapter to a journey defined by perseverance and consistency. Since the Covid-19 pandemic, Ranks has steadily built a reputation as one of South Africa’s most respected breakers. After reaching the National Final in 2021, he claimed victory at the East London Cypher in 2022 before making semi-final appearances in 2023, 2024 and 2025. His 2026 triumph sees him reclaim the title and return to the National Final with renewed confidence.
Looking ahead to the next challenge, the East London champion believes there is still more to come.
“I’m ready to represent because I know Nationals will be tough. There are things I couldn’t do here because I didn’t train enough, but I’ll be ready when the National Final comes around,” he said.
With East London now complete, attention turns to Cape Town for the final qualifying cypher of the season. The event will determine the last group of dancers advancing to the National Final, where South Africa’s top B-Boys and B-Girls will compete for national honours and the opportunity to represent the country on the global stage.
The Red Bull BC One Cape Town Cypher takes place on Saturday, 1 August 2026, before the South Africa National Final heads to Cape Town on Sunday, 6 September 2026. Entry for spectators is free, giving fans an opportunity to witness the country’s best breakers in action.
The stakes could not be higher. The winning B-Boy and B-Girl from the National Final will earn the honour of representing South Africa at the Red Bull BC One World Final in Toronto, Canada, on 29 November 2026, where they will go head-to-head with the world’s elite breakers in pursuit of the World Champion title.
For B-Boy Ranks, the dream remains alive. With the National Final now firmly in his sights, his journey from East London to Toronto is only just beginning.
