A historic moment in South African theatre is set to unfold as the original cast of Sarafina! reunites for a special commemorative performance as part of The Market Theatre’s 50th anniversary celebrations.

The reunion forms part of Let’s Meet at The Market Theatre, a unique immersive theatrical experience taking place from 19 to 21 June 2026. Designed as a journey through the institution’s rich history, the production will guide audiences through the people, productions and defining moments that have shaped one of South Africa’s most influential cultural landmarks over the past five decades.

Recognising the deep connection between Sarafina! and The Market Theatre’s legacy, members of the original cast will present a special 56-minute performance during the celebrations. The occasion marks the first time in 35 years that the original cast members will perform together, having last shared the stage in 1991.

Created by the late legendary playwright and producer Mbongeni Ngema, Sarafina! first premiered at The Market Theatre in 1987 before becoming an international sensation. The production captivated audiences around the world with its powerful portrayal of South African youth during apartheid and remains one of the country’s most celebrated theatrical works.

Speaking on behalf of the original cast, Nhlanhla Ngema reflected on the significance of the reunion.

“Returning to The Market Theatre with my fellow cast members is both emotional and deeply meaningful. Sarafina! is more than a production; it is a movement that gave a voice to a generation and showcased the resilience, courage and talent of South Africans to the world.”

The original cast members participating in the reunion include Baby Cele, Ntombikhona Dlamini, Lindiwe Dlamini, Sboniso Khumalo, Thandekile Mqadi, Kipizane Skweyiya, Nandi Ndlovu, Linda Mtolo, Lindiwe Hlengwa, Zandile Hlengwa, Dumisani Dlamini, Pat Mlaba, Nhlanhla Ngema, Congo Hadebe, Nkosingiphile Sithole and Mpume Shelembe.

Their return offers audiences a rare opportunity to witness a living piece of South African theatre history while celebrating the artists whose work helped shape the country’s cultural identity.

As The Market Theatre commemorates 50 years of fearless storytelling, artistic excellence and cultural activism, the reunion of the original Sarafina! cast stands as a powerful reminder of the institution’s enduring impact on South African and global theatre. The celebration honours an extraordinary legacy while looking ahead to the next chapter in the theatre’s remarkable journey.
