Dr Risimati Mathye Releases The Triumphant Mind™

Estimated read time 5 min read

In The Triumphant Mind™, the South African public sector leader reflects on hardship, perseverance and the mindset required to keep moving forward.

Success is often measured by the titles people hold, the qualifications they earn and the positions they eventually occupy. But behind every achievement is a story of decisions, sacrifices and moments of uncertainty that rarely make it into the public eye.

For Dr Risimati Mathye, that story begins in Phaphazela Village, Limpopo, and forms the foundation of his new book, The Triumphant Mind™: From Phaphazela Village, Limpopo to the World Stage.

Released in 2026, the book reflects on his journey from a childhood marked by financial hardship to a career spanning engineering, academia, infrastructure development and public sector leadership. However, Mathye is less interested in simply documenting his accomplishments than in examining the mindset that helped shape them.

One of the defining experiences of his childhood came when a devastating fire destroyed his family’s home. At one point, the family slept beneath a mango tree while working to rebuild their lives. His mother worked tirelessly to provide for her children, taking on jobs that included farm work, cleaning homes, washing and ironing clothes, and selling produce.

These experiences provide important context for a book that examines how circumstances can influence a person’s outlook without necessarily determining their future.

Mathye holds a PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Johannesburg and has more than two decades of experience in infrastructure development and public administration. He currently serves as Deputy Director-General: Water & Sanitation Services Management at South Africa’s Department of Water and Sanitation.

Yet The Triumphant Mind™ looks beyond the professional milestones to explore the less visible side of progress, including rejection, failure, difficult decisions, relationships and periods when the future may seem uncertain.

The book considers the role of self-discovery, discipline, resilience and perseverance in personal development. It also examines how the voices of others can either strengthen a person’s journey or create doubt, reminding readers that progress is rarely a straight line.

Rather than presenting success as a guaranteed outcome of positive thinking, Mathye reflects on the work, sacrifice and personal responsibility involved in pursuing a vision. His central message is that becoming the person one hopes to be requires more than ambition; it demands a willingness to learn, adapt and begin again when circumstances change.

“FUTURE-YOU is shaped by the decisions of the PRESENT-YOU. Dreams may be free, but triumph carries a cost,” reads one of the book’s central reflections.

Through his experiences, Mathye invites readers to consider a question that extends beyond his own life: how does a person learn to see possibilities that their present circumstances may not appear to offer?

For those navigating career setbacks, personal transitions or ambitions that seem distant, the book offers a perspective grounded in lived experience. It does not suggest that hardship automatically leads to success, but encourages readers to reflect on how they respond to challenges and the choices they make along the way.

Ultimately, The Triumphant Mind™ is a reflection on becoming rather than a celebration of achievement alone. By looking back at the boy he was before the qualifications, leadership positions and professional recognition, Mathye examines the experiences that helped shape the man he is today.

His story serves as a reminder that a person’s beginnings are part of their history, but need not become the boundaries of their future.

BOOK SYNOPSIS

The Triumphant Mind™ is a powerful reflection on what becomes possible through a mind that learns to triumph. Through the life, experiences and reflections of Dr Risimati Mathye, the book examines the extraordinary distance that can exist between a person’s beginnings and their becoming. From Phaphazela Village in Limpopo, through poverty, education, engineering, academia, professional advancement and public leadership, to international platforms, Dr Mathye reflects not simply on where his life has taken him, but on the mind that had to develop along the way. His story becomes the lens through which the reader encounters a larger human question: What makes it possible for someone to see beyond the evidence of their present circumstances and progressively become what their beginnings could not predict?

The book begins with self-discovery. It moves through dreams and their cost, perception, competing voices, relationships, destiny helpers, adversity, resilience, temporary victories, failure, perseverance and the responsibility of finally arriving at the triumph one has pursued.

Dr Mathye does not present his journey as a straight line. There are moments of poverty and uncertainty. There are decisions that appear, at first, to have been mistakes. There are seasons of progress and seasons of despair. There are people whose voices strengthen the journey and others whose interpretations can threaten it. There are victories that feel final but are only temporary. There are moments when the individual must stop, reassess and launch again.

Running through these reflections is the power of the mind: the place in which possibility can be conceived before it becomes visible, but also the place where doubt, fear, perception and the voices of others can interrupt what a person might otherwise become.

The Triumphant Mind™ is therefore neither a celebration of achievement nor a prescription for success. It is a reflection on becoming. Dr Mathye looks backwards from the vantage point of the man he has become and examines the boy, the choices, the people, the failures, the sacrifices, the lessons and the internal battles that existed before the titles and accomplishments. Ultimately, his reflections converge around four enduring principles:
