Estimated read time 3 min read

Apple Music has launched The Sounds of Africa, a bold new global campaign spotlighting five influential music capitals on the continent: Accra, Dar es Salaam, Lagos, Nairobi, and Johannesburg. This initiative pays homage to Africa’s far-reaching impact on global music culture and the diverse soundscapes born from its cities.

From Lagos’ bustling beats to the vibrant nightlife of Johannesburg, African artists are no longer just influencing global music—they’re leading it. The Sounds of Africa amplifies this momentum by curating five city-specific playlists, each carefully assembled by local artists, industry tastemakers, and media voices who represent and embody the sonic identity of their respective cities. These playlists feature a dynamic blend of current hits and iconic tracks that showcase the spirit and evolution of African music.

Not Every Story Makes Headlines. But Every Story Matters.

To enhance the experience, Apple Music has also commissioned exclusive DJ mixes from leading DJs across the continent: AD DJ (Accra), DJ Vasley (Dar es Salaam), Spaceship Billy (Lagos), DJ Grauchi (Nairobi), and DJ PH (Johannesburg).

The Pulse of Johannesburg

Johannesburg stands tall as a cultural powerhouse and the birthplace of kwaito—a genre rooted in resilience and creative expression. From its historic role in South Africa’s music revolution to its status as the launchpad for global sensations like amapiano, Jozi continues to set the tone for the continent.

Rapper Kwesta notes, “These are just a few of our South African songs that I believe represent the city’s creativity, its pain, joy, and its resilience through different generations.”

Singer and TV personality Nandi Madida reflects, “Johannesburg lives in me—and these songs remind me why. When Tyla proudly mentioned ‘Joburg’ to the world in Jump, it wasn’t just her moment, it was ours.”

Silkour (Siya Metane) adds, “Joburg is a hub of urban culture. Being able to enjoy the city’s nightlife in a post-apartheid era is just as groundbreaking as the amapiano wave dominating global stages.”

Samthing Soweto recalls his musical roots: “Growing up in Jozi, I was surrounded by sounds—from Ringo Madlingozi’s soul to Lucky Dube’s reggae—but kwaito was the heartbeat of my youth.”

DJ PH, who crafted the Johannesburg mix, shares: “The artists, songs, and genres showcased in my mix highlight the diversity and quality that South Africa brings to the table. I’m excited to represent the sounds that have shaped Johannesburg and continue to influence the world.”

With The Sounds of Africa, Apple Music reaffirms that Africa isn’t just on the map—it’s the rhythm of the future.
