Community arts centres play a crucial role in developing local talent, preserving culture and creating opportunities for artists. However, with funding shortages and infrastructure challenges continuing to affect the sector, stakeholders across Gauteng are preparing to confront these issues head-on.
The Federation of Gauteng Community Arts Centres, in partnership with the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation (GDSACR), will host the Gauteng Community Arts Centres Indaba 2026 on 31 October and 1 November at the Market Theatre Photography Workshop in Newtown, Johannesburg.
Held under the theme “Positioning Community Arts at a Centre of Cultural, Creative and Community Development”, the two-day gathering will bring together representatives from 50 community arts centres across Gauteng’s five regions, alongside 25 organisations funded through the Gauteng Community Arts Development Programme.

Among the key issues on the agenda are inadequate funding, infrastructure constraints, skills development and the long-term sustainability of community arts centres. In addition, discussions will focus on strengthening relationships between centres, municipalities and government to improve coordination and support.
Mpho Molepo, Provincial and National Chairperson of Community Arts Centres, says the sector needs more than recognition to thrive.
“Community arts centres are more than buildings where art happens; they are the heartbeat of our communities. They are where talent is discovered, culture is preserved, young people find their voices and artists get an opportunity to shine. But passion alone cannot sustain this sector. Our centres need resources, recognition and meaningful support. This Indaba is our opportunity to speak with one voice, confront the challenges we face and demand a future where community arts are not an afterthought, but an essential part of Gauteng’s cultural and economic development. We are not just asking for support; we are calling for action.”
Furthermore, the programme will explore funding access, professionalisation and opportunities for artists to build sustainable careers within the creative industries. A mini-launch of the Gauteng Community Arts Development Programme will also form part of the gathering, highlighting the 25 organisations receiving support.
Ultimately, the Indaba aims to move beyond discussions by developing practical resolutions and a coordinated implementation framework to guide the sector over the following 12 months.
Media representatives are invited to attend and engage with community arts stakeholders as they work towards strengthening the future of Gauteng’s creative sector.
