Dwson Gets Personal on New Album Nothing to Lose

Estimated read time 4 min read

In South Africa’s electronic music landscape, deep house is often reduced to function—club-ready beats, heavy basslines, and looping instrumentals built for the dance floor. For Cape Town-based producer, DJ, and songwriter Dwson (pronounced Daw-son), the genre has always carried deeper meaning. With his sixth studio album, Nothing to Lose, he steps into his most personal and emotionally complete body of work to date.

Set for release on 6 February 2026, Nothing to Lose signals a clear departure from prevailing trends. Where much of the scene leans toward instrumentals, Dwson places vocals at the centre of every one of the album’s 15 tracks. From full performances to subtle rhythmic chops, each vocal element serves the storytelling. The result is a soulful, melodic project that speaks not only to deep house loyalists, but to listeners who long for the emotional songwriting of early 2000s R&B—reimagined through a modern, experimental lens.

Crafted over three years, the album is designed as a continuous listening experience. Carefully placed interludes and a cohesive sonic palette allow songwriting to take precedence over repetition, creating a journey that unfolds track by track rather than moment by moment.

The title Nothing to Lose reflects Dwson’s own artistic journey. While studying music production at Soul Candi in Cape Town, he once felt overshadowed by the technical skill of his peers and nearly walked away from music altogether. Encouraged by his mother and guided by his tutor, Mike Kelly, he persevered—eventually developing the signature sound that would earn him Best Underground Record of the Year and multiple platinum certifications.

That evolution is captured in the album’s opening track, Nothing to Lose featuring Unwnd. More than an introduction, the song anchors the entire project, confronting fear, self-doubt, and reinvention head-on. It invites listeners to silence their inner critic, release the weight of the past, and take a leap into the unknown—promising that something extraordinary exists on the other side.

The album’s foundation is Selfish featuring Ziyon of Liquideep, a track completed three years ago that became the project’s creative compass. Its nostalgic vocal style paired with Dwson’s refined production set the emotional tone for what followed.

At the heart of the album lies Oh My Love, a powerful collaboration with the late producer Poizen, who passed away in August 2025. Featuring an interpolation of Luther Vandross’s Never Too Much, the track stands as a triumphant tribute, already resonating deeply with audiences during live performances.

Dwson also pushes into new sonic territory on Falling, a collaboration with beatsbyhand and Los Angeles-based vocalist Leiah. The track experiments with the emerging “3-step” sound, blending aggressive low-end bass with ethereal, soulful vocals.

Another standout element of Nothing to Lose is the introduction of Unwnd, a mysterious new R&B voice featured on tracks such as Don’t Deserve Me and Can’t Wait To See You. Though little is known about the artist, their presence brings a fresh, youthful energy that complements Dwson’s production and hints at a new wave within the Cape Town R&B scene.

To mark the album’s release, Dwson will host two exclusive launch events—beginning in Cape Town on 7 February 2026 at The Alley, followed by a Johannesburg celebration on 28 February 2026.

From founding the Dope Room event platform to sharing stages with global icons such as Kaytranada, Louis Vega, and Keinemusik, Dwson has consistently championed unity, groove, and emotional depth. With Nothing to Lose, he delivers his most melodic, vulnerable, and fully realised work yet.
